Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Day 2024

The week of May 5th is dedicated to honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous People and their families. This year The Society participated in community events with other local partners and hosted a Red Dress Rock Painting event from April 29th to May 3rd. In addition, members of our staff attended Ribbon Skirt and Red Dress Pin making at the High Level Native Friendship Center.

This week was concluded with a walk on MMIP Day, May 5th, sometimes also known as Red Dress Day. The walk began in Centennial park and was opened with a prayer and traditional drumming. Following the introduction, individuals were invited to speak of their personal experiences with MMIP and share their loved ones stories. Mothers spoke of their missing children, sisters spoke of their murdered mothers and family members and as they shared these experiences the community came together to mourn with them.

We thank our community partners for hosting these events and we thank our community members for showing up and supporting MMIP.
